What do Walter Kollo's operetta Marietta, Darius Milhaud's La création du monde, and Béla Bartók's Tanzsuite have in common? Looking at their styles and forms, they could hardly be more different. Yet all three works shaped the musical year 1923, the year of their premiere. The orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin, conducted by General Music Director James Gaffigan, travels back 100 years to discover the history and music of a year!

Xtended invites you to take a look behind the scenes of an orchestra. This evening features live music in the hall, interwoven with virtual and interactive experiences. The event opens with a fast-paced, entertaining piece that showcases the strengths and unique character of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Afterwards, the audience is invited to explore VR installations of the orchestra at various stations throughout the venue, enjoy intimate mini-concerts, and actively shape the course of the main concert using their own mobile phones and other tools.

Get ready for a special evening with pianist Alexander Melnikov. The great keyboard wizard will talk about Beethoven the man, why he holds the First Piano Concerto so dear to his heart and all the beauty you can discover in it.
He will be helped by Iñigo Giner Miranda, composer, performer and concert innovator, who, for the Ruhrtriennale and Beethovenfest Bonn, among others, has developed formats that bring the music closer to the audience, and the listener right into the sound. For the Listeners Academy, he matches the energy of Beethoven’s early years and Melnikov’s passion in a lively and captivating narrative.

With LasLesLies! [ReadReadRead!], the ensemble for new musical theatre DieOrdnungDerDinge [The order of things], develops a musical theatre experience for children. The six musical performances are dedicated to reading and invite the audience to join in. At five audio-visual stations, performers Cathrin Romeis, Vera Kardos, and Iñigo Giner Miranda lead their young audience to books that are full of different sounds and landscapes and tell fantastic stories. Together with the children, they decipher hieroglyphs, trace the origin of secret symbols, and find a delicious range of terms and phrases waiting to be found in the word salad.

The TONALi Festival 2025 will come to an impressive close with the “Social Symphony.” The Elbphilharmonie will be transformed into a living soundscape of Hamburg: musicians, dancers, and singers will perform not only on stage, but throughout the entire venue—in the stands, among the audience, and in the middle of the crowd. Music, movement, and personal stories merge into a multi-layered performance that brings the city's diversity to life.
This “Social Symphony” is being conceived and implemented by the Berlin ensemble DieOrdnungDerDinge, which was awarded the TONALi Award “Mut zur Utopie” in 2024. The focus is on voices from Hamburg: people talk about their everyday lives, their neighborhoods, and their lives in the city. The result is a multifaceted portrait – direct, complex, and authentic.
Contributors include the Hamburg Boys' Choir, a hundred young people, musicians from the TONALi Academy – and the audience will also be part of the performance. Senator Karen Pein will open the evening with a speech celebrating TONALi's 15th anniversary.

In Weltenwandern, DieOrdnungDerDinge observes the flight paths of numerous migratory birds in the theater sky and explores the skills needed on land, water, and in the air to reach distant lands. The three performers pick up the sound of chirping and cawing and join the birds on their incredible journeys into the distance. They take a look at the migration routes of their own families while they follow in the footsteps of cranes, nightingales, geese, and cuckoos: along the way, they discover the sixth sense of birds, marvel at their anatomy, and are inspired by their flying skills. The result is a composition of baroque and contemporary bird sounds, songs, images, and stories about the constant search for a better place to live, an impulse that seems to connect us humans and birds.
